Friendly Tips for MySpace Beginners
If you're going to sign up at MySpace for the first time, the first tip is safety. We've all heard of security problems because users weren't paying attention to the element of privacy.
Check some of the profiles on MySpace. You'll notice that many of them now say "this profile is set to private. This user must add you as a friend to see his/her profile." A little precaution goes a long way.
Here are some friendly tips taken from the MySpace site which we've summarized for you:
- Your profile and posts on the forums are viewed by the public. Be careful about revealing too much of yourself. Don't give your address, phone number, email address, school, workplace, clubs and anything else that will make it easy for people to track you down.
- Don't believe everything you read. Some people will deliberately mislead viewers. When someone says "I manage a $1 billion company and generate phenomenal sales…" you can be sure that if that's true, he won't have time to be on MySpace.
- If you receive a message that makes you uncomfortable, report it immediately to MySpace. If you feel your safety is threatened, notify the police. You can't take any chances.
- Don't say or post anything that you might regret later. People change - from liberal-minded they transition into conservative-minded. So if you like to post pictures of yourself in seductive poses, you may not want those pictures seen by the public in say five years, when you're applying at a bank, a ministry or a help organization. Be futuristic-thinking when you sign up at a social site like MySpace.
- Don't lie about your age. If you're under 18 and say you're 18, MySpace will find out and they'll delete your file. If you're older and say you're in your 20's in the hope of attracting much younger users, your file will also get deleted. The reason MySpace is implementing this policy is that many parents have complained saying that their kids' safety are at stake.

- Say something unusual in your profile so that viewers get attracted to you and want to be part of your network.
- Pimp your profile by using layouts, backgrounds, banners, avatars, music. You can also create videos.
- If there's a subject you're passionate about, join the forums. It's a great way to find friends who share the same passion.
